Amirah J. Cook

Hey Girl, Hey!

I'm Amirah J. Cook

Before I begin, let me warn you: I'm a writer. So, I get longwinded. I'm also an overly transparent person. I have a theory that by sharing our own experiences we can help others feel seen and supported in their journeys. And I'm all about that.

I'm a hopeful romantic committed to creating the lifestyle I want. I've lived around the world with my husband Jarrell Cook since 2013. We are on a quest to experience more to best decide what we want for ourselves.

So far, I've learned I love summer year round, with easy access to water and slow living. For that reason, we typically live in tropical destinations. Currently, that's Bali, Indonesia.

I like to start my days slowly, spending a few hours on my morning routine. And sometimes I need a day, or week, off without notice. Obviously, I need to work for myself.

When I find lifestyle characteristics that improve my well-being, I make them non-negotiable. I take the job of caring for myself very seriously. I'm dedicated to finding and constantly adjusting a unique recipe to my happiness.

I'm Best Known for My...

Lifestyle

More than anything, I enjoy my life. I'm not a 'grind now, rest later' type. I'm more, 'rest now, work a little later, maybe.' I didn't create the lifestyle I wanted to work all the time.

Writing

If ever given the option, I will always choose to communicate through writing. It's my comfort zone. Through lengthy Instagram captions, and my books, I express myself through words.

Travel

I've been traveling and living abroad with my husband since 2013. My blog began as a travel diary and has grown alongside me, now showcasing my life abroad.

Business

Since quitting my retail career in 2012, I have always worked for myself and in partnership with my husband. I share a lot of tips and inspiration as I learn, hoping to help you avoid my mistakes.

Quick Facts

You're here because something about my life has caught your attention. Maybe you're curious, maybe you're inspired, but for sure you're interested in knowing more.

I'm the transparency queen. When Jarrell and I set out to create the lifestyle we wanted in 2013, we had no clue what we were doing (neither of us had ever even traveled abroad), or how we would make money. I searched and searched online for people doing what I wanted to and found no help.

When I was able to find people living abroad, or traveling often, they were so secretive about how they did it. I am exact opposite. I share my process and the tips and tricks I've learned with hopes of short circuiting the process for someone else.

Here's a quick breakdown about me. Scroll to the FAQ section for more.

  • After graduating from Howard University, I started a career in retail management and quickly learned that career path wasn't for me. I was constantly worried and stressed, which led to a diagnosis of situational anxiety. The 'good paying' job I'd prayed for was literally making me sick. I quit in August 2012 and have worked for myself since.
  • I've lived abroad since 2013. Jarrell and I left on a one-way flight to Panama and spent 6-months backpacking through Central America. Then, we spent a year and a half living in over a dozen destinations in Europe. Next, we lived in Morocco for 3-months, spending time in Marrakech and Guelmim. Eventually, we made our way to Asia, where we visited another dozen or so countries over the course of a few years before settling in Thailand. Later, we vacationed in Europe for half a year before returning to Asia, where we now reside in Bali, Indonesia.
  • Traveling was my dream, entrepreneurship was Jarrell's. He has led us to financial freedom through our entrepreneurial ventures we manage while living around the world. We dedicated a year (starting in Central America and ending in Europe) to learn how to make money online before launching our freelance careers. Now, we run a few businesses from wherever we are.
  • In 2015, I started my professional writing career. I have since released my own trilogy, while also ghostwriting over thirty novels for others. Now, I mentor women to write and publish their stories in my Write It, Sis Virtual Writing Mentorship.

"Working with Amirah has been one of the greatest decisions in my career. Her professionalism matches her relatability and compassion unlike any other mentor I have had. Having someone who understands the rigorous process of writing as well as the circumstantiality of life and how it can affect the writing process (especially for WOC during our current political and social environment!) is priceless. I have gotten further than I ever imagined I could and this is greatly due to the support and encouragement Amirah provides. 15/10 recommend you to Write it, Sis!!"

My Life

How Did You Begin Living Abroad?

It was always something I felt inclined to do. I wasn't sure what would come of it, but more than traveling abroad, I felt I was supposed to experience living abroad. So, in 2013 we decided to make it happen. We began as backpackers, volunteering and house sitting, while we launched our freelance careers.

How Do You Afford to Travel and Live Abroad?

Because our businesses operate online, we are able to work from anywhere. We also have products, investments, and a business that operate independently to create passive income streams. You can learn more about this in the soon to be re-released Passport Income, a guide I co-wrote with Jarrell Cook teaching how we've financially developed this lifestyle.

What Do You Do For a Living?

What feels right. I pretty much live for a living. Whatever I'm most interested in, I focus my time on. What I do, and what I do for money, aren't always synonymous. My business focus changes quarterly.
