Our Story
In 2012, I was living in sunny Los Angeles, very far from my hometown of Columbus, Ohio. I'd achieved my educational goals, and had a pretty cool life. But how I was affording it, a less than fulfilling career at a retail giant, ruined it. I quickly realized that how I achieved success was even more important than simply achieving it. I wasn't able to enjoy the fruits of my labor, constantly working to ensure someone else's business was thriving.
When I decided to quit my career to travel in 2012, I called my childhood friend Jarrell, and he thought it was a great idea. He kept mentioning how cool it was and eventually I asked, "Bro, do you want to come?" He did. As my husband. So, I like to say that I proposed travel and he proposed marriage. Again, hopeless romantic. I'd been crushing on him for YEARS! (He will tell this story differently, but this is my blog.)
Anyways, we were married less than 2-months later, and set out on this incredible adventure around the world a year after that. I didn't care how we traveled, I just wanted to see the world. Jarrell was more focused on creating the lifestyle we wanted. He has always been an artist, I have always wanted to write, but outside of that we weren't sure what our dream life looked like. We had to be very honest with ourselves, asking tough questions about who we wanted to be, and what we wanted out of life. For us, that answer was simple - freedom.
I like to live in tropical environments until I've seen one too many spiders, then I crave the city. We needed location independence. Jarrell and I love spending our days together, so we knew we wanted to make money in a way that didn't require the bulk of our time. We needed to develop passive income. These small details soon became the fabric of the life we wanted.
Even with an accounting degree from Howard, I had no idea how to make money for myself. Thankfully, Jarrell is a forever learner, and had read about people doing what we wanted, creating a life tailor fit to their desires. So we studied, dedicating a year to learn how to make money for ourselves while volunteering around the world. We learned so much about freelancing, blogging, affiliate marketing, selling, and reselling, we wrote the ultimate guide for making money online (scroll down to learn more).
Now, I write full-time, both for myself and as a ghostwriter (download my first novella here), Jarrell creates art inspired by our journey when he's not stalking his investment portfolio, and we regularly collaborate on joint ventures. One of the questions I’m asked most is how we afford to travel the world nonstop. The answer, unfortunately, is less romantic than you might expect – we work. We just happen to be the boss in the scenario. We've started companies that work for us, allowing us to live the life of our dreams now.
