Hiking on Bastimentos Island, proved to be one of our most enjoyable and adventurous activities to date. The hike is both strenuous and exceptionally beautiful. There are unbelievable views and steep inclines for the first half. The island is known for small and poisonous red dart frogs, which you will see on the hike, if you look out for them. You will also see lizards and an occasional snake if you’re [un]lucky.
Halfway to Wizard Beach, at the highest point in Bastimentos, you will reach Up in The Hill. Built by two expats, Up in The Hill creates and sells many different toiletries ranging from shampoo to foot cream, as well as the ‘Best Brownies in Bocas’ made from the coconut palm and cacao trees surrounding the property. I tried several of the infused coconut oils to solve everything from sunburn to dry skin. I also used (and still have) their natural insect repellant, ‘Stop Scratchin’ bite cream as well as a peppermint foot cream.
After another hike, this portion downhill, we finally reached Wizard Beach. More beautiful than we could have ever imagined, Wizard Beach has beautifully clear water and soft light brown sand. We had been warned to be careful because the floor of the Sea sporadically dipped, making drowning a regular occurrence. Everyone we met had a story of someone drowning at Wizard Beach, whether a friend or a family member. That said, we were careful and really enjoyed our time, spending the entire day on Wizard Beach, eating pineapples and empanadas.
